Fathom Five Divers – Kauai – 02/05/07 update: The BrunetteBabe and I did 7 dives with them and they were excellent. The Ken / Debbie, captain / DM, combination was amazing. Ken has mapped many, if not all, of the dive sites and Debbie has been diving there for something like 14 years. They are very skilled at making the dive experience perfect for each individual diver.

Weasel word – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia – “A weasel word is a word that is intended to, or has the effect of, softening the force of a potentially loaded or otherwise controversial statement, or avoids forming a clear position on a particular issue.”

Some examples in the Wikipedia entry are:

• “People say…” (Who are the people who say what?)
• “It turns out that…”
• “Rumour has it that she has left him.” (Where was this rumour published or spread?)

From the Wikipedia’s Manual of Style: Wikipedia:Avoid weasel words.

I think a general form of “weaseiling” is speaking such that every sentence is in the form of a question. If you want to make a statement, do so; if you want ask a question, ask.

Michael Brown’s list of weasel words – not quite in line with the Wikipedia definition, but a good list of “… some of the linguistic atrocities I and other reporters have seen in press releases and news reports over the years.”

Sadly, the Gyration Presentation Remote with all the functions and options, including the presentation edition of GyroTools, is now a discontinued product . This is a growing list of possible replacements.

Gyration GYROTRANSPORT Air Mouse Presenter – Not nearly as powerful as the Presentation Remote but very small and compact, and includes the GyroTools software … Caution: includes a flash drive (with the GyroTools software loaded) which is not allowed in certain classified facilities!

Another possibility from Gyration is the GO PRO 2.4GHz Optical Air Mouse. Also includes the Gyrotools software.

Note that Gyration is “sold out” of the GyroTools software. I’m not sure that I’d make a commitment to the Gyration products at this time; things have been changing there and it’s not clear what will be offered in the future. I heard that the GyroTools software is an OEM version of ClickTricks from Southpac Software. I installed the trial version and it looks just like GyroTools. In a brief tryout, it looks as if you can assign tools to mouse clicks and other events, so a wireless mouse tool should work with ClickTricks. May just be a workable alternative to GyroTools.

Interlink has a number of tools including the RemotePoint RF – Clearly not as powerful as the Gyration Remote, but does have 4 “programmable” additional buttons and the ‘Presenteation Effects Toolkit,’ so maybe … there are a countdown timer and screen marker tools in the toolkit. The RemotePoint Jade may also be a powerful tool.

The RemotePoint RF is discounted to $147 (list is $199) here on Amazon.com! This will probably be my next remote.
